June
18 – 24, 2011 – MAUMC Junior &
Senior High Youth Mission Trip to Choctaw Mission in
Mississippi – This United Methodist Mission is
surround by the Choctaw Reservation main community known
as Pearl River. There are eight Choctaw communities
in Mississippi and 9,600 members of the Mississippi
Band of Choctaw Indians. The mission is located six
miles west of Philadelphia, Mississippi and 20 miles
of Carthage, Mississippi on Highway 16. The Choctaw
Mission focuses on families with an emphasis on children
and youth. Poverty, substance abuse and chronic health
problem are some of the hard issues faced by the Choctaw.
Our trip will focus on sharing the love of Jesus Christ
through fellowship with the Choctaw. We spend time will
them through Sunday worship at one of the three local
UMC churches, Vacation Bible School, preparing and serving
simple meals to children and to the community, home
repair and other projects as needed. We will also tour
the Choctaw museum and visit sites that the community
honors, which will give us a better understanding of
the Choctaw history and culture. This is going to be
a wonderful opportunity. The per person cost of the
trip is approximately $325.00,* which covers food, lodging,
gas and project expense. More information about deposits
and payment deadlines will be sent out as soon as possible.
Mission trip fund raising will take place and information
will be sent out on these opportunities. To receive
a credit toward the trip cost, participants must take
part in fund raising.
* The youth fund raising is limited to covering the
cost of the Summer Mission Trip and Summer Mission Programs.
The cost for retreats will not be covered by fund raising,
so information is being sent out early for the purpose
of budgeting. If you have question, please contact Pam
McCurdy.
